about

Another favorite childhood animated TV special appeared the year after the Peanuts special, and once again I was captivated by the music, notably the hilarious bass profundo “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” In my mid-20s, I transcribed and arranged the many varied cues of “Welcome Christmas” from the soundtrack LP for SATB choir. I then used that as reference for this instrumental arrangement. As for my rather Seussian harp guitars, I initially knew nothing whatsoever about them, but have since become (believe it or not!) the world’s foremost harp guitar scholar. Thus, I can now tell you that the skinny one with the “fan frets” is attributed to Swedish luthier Otto Selling c.1840 (!) while the giant double-soundhole “Harwood” was one of the earliest American harp guitar inventions, created by the J. W. Jenkins’ Sons Music Co. of Kansas City, Missouri in the early 1890s.
