I had always imagined doing this tune with a host of mandolins, but came up with an even better idea when I suggested it to the great James Kline for his contribution to my 2011 Harp Guitar Music label holiday compilation. He loved the idea of a duet and went all out on his 19-string “arch harp guitar,” leaving random less-busy spots for me to take the lead on my Knutsen harp mandolin with floating basses. He inspired me to similarly go for broke – you are hearing just TWO instruments! Jim’s different instrument colors include his fretted nylon neck, his open sub-bass strings and his bank of 8 nylon harp-like “super-trebles.” My harp-mando then provides the sound of a normal mandolin neck along with lower, bell-like open basses and use of harmonics across all 8 string courses. As Jim said, “I didn’t know it would turn out to be a symphony!”
